Chad 2 Slick Sugden adds another crown - This TIme European!!!!

When THE Bell rang last time out in Newark I was told that was the best show ever! Could we do it again? YES! What a night of action 13 fights involving the best amateurs and professional kick boxers in Europe came to Kelham Hall on Saturday 11th Oct.

Top of The Bill in the Amatuer Fights was local boy Chad Sugden aged 14 fighting 17 year old Julien Come French Champion. This bout was sponsored by Jordans Road Surfacing and lived upto its expectations. Before the main event we enjoyed 2 x white collar boxing bouts and Chads youger brother Regis Sugden 13 fighting Kieran Lomax 14 from Cobra gym in the Black Country.

Regis used his boxing skills and movement to dominate this Full Contact Kickboxing bout wich suits his hard punching style. Making them miss and makin pay is Rebbbgis motto. He had a extra hard task as Ben Atkin from BMA Construction had just been beaten by Carl Harvey from derbyshire panthers. Regis won this tough bout wit a 3 round points win over this game opponent.

Next up for Newark was Mark Cooper coming into the fight unbeaten with 3 wins coming by the way of KO. His opponent from Middlesboro Colin Whayhill also with 3 wins by KO on his record. Mark started very fast with strong round house kicks and punches. His opponent was left swinging wildly allthough always dangerous. Mark caught Colin in 2nd round and knocked him down and the referee stepped in and gave him a standing 8 count. Then in the same round Mark got caught with a straight right hand as he was kicking and got knocked of his feet. The referee started the count much to the surprize of the Newark camp. This meant the earlier knock down was cancelled out. So in the 3rd and final round it was good old fashioned dust up. Mark Cooper came out on top with a unanimous points win.

Next up was another local lad Chris Oxley against Lee Addlesea from Impact gym in Sleaford. Chris started fast and stuck to his game plan through out the 3 rounds and always looked like he was about to force a stoppage but the heavier opponent from Sleaford was going nowhere.

At 48 hours notice and giving away over 25kg in weight Doug Kent out boxed for most of the bout his much heavier opponent Andy Llloyd from Black Dragons. Andy was looking for the big punch throughout the fight but Doug boxed and moved really well particulary given it was his first experience in boxing ring. Andy caught Doug in the last round, the referee stepped in and counted to 8. Doug bravely stayed on his feet through out and finished the round strong. Expecting a draw given how well Doug had boxed, however it was not to be as the judges gave it to Andy Lloyd.

Next up was Mickey Blackburn seaching for a win after a 3 year lay off. He got just that but had to come through a massive attack and a very fit and strong Martin Robinson from Sleaford. This fight could of been fight of the night because it was so close but a well deserved win to NMA fighter Mickey Blackburn.

The next fight was always going to be a tough defence as Lewis Fallon U18 British Champion was up against Leif Taggart from Middlesboro training under Cris Jansen Piers BFKKO. Leif is well know to everyone as he fights under all styles and very successful. He holds a World Title under K1 Style rules. Leif and Lewis have fought before but in a 3 round contest and this time is scheduled for 5. Lewis started very quickly and narrowly maybe took the first round. Rounds 2 and 3 were close but Leif seemed to have the edge on power altthough the volume of punches and kicks still coming from the Newark fighter. Leif was edging the rounds, and in the 5th and final round Lewis was told to go out out and give it his all. He did just that but unfortunately as both fighters exchanged punches and kicks close quarters Lewis got caught with an accidental knee. Lewis was cut and it was bad, the doctor was called over and stopped the contest. Because the cut was caused by an accidental illegal blow the fight was to go to the score cards. The 3 x judges at ringside all gave it in favour allbeit close to Leif Taggart who was declared the New Champion.

Lewis was told to get straight to Hospital to get his nasty cut stiched but refused to move until he had supported his club mate and sparring partner Chad Sugden who was about to face French Kickboxing Champion Julien Come who is 3 years his senior. 4 weeks ago we got a call from the French Kickboxing President stating bad news we had lost Chads original opponent who was 15. Chad still 14 was due to be fighting for the vacant u16 European Title. But after loosing his original opponent and having to switch to an older fighter we contacted the EFK who confirmed he was elidgable to compete for a U18 European Title. This was a massive risk for the Newark camp but Chad is very experienced and we were told we would have a height and reach advantage. Taking this into account the match was made and what a fight. Chad told not to mix it at close quarters because of the maturity of his opponent went about his work in clinical fashion. Punches and kicks were being whipped in from all angles and it looked like Chad was in good shape. Julien had come to fight and that he did trying to unsettle his younger opponent with looping hooks and constant pressure. Chad kept his composure through all the rounds and never let the French fighter win an axchange. Fighting when he needed to but remaining 2 Slick for most of therounds living upto his ring name. This resulted in a total shut out and all 3 judges giving a unanimous points win to Chad. The New European U18 Full Contact Kickboxing Champion at 14 years of age. What a night and what a cool head for such a young man. In a night where he could of been expected to be nervous he seemed to thrive in the excitement and fuss of such a big fight. Chad was led out by his sponsor Baz Jordan, clubmates Danny Swanwick, Jordan Frost, Brothers Regis and Bailey Sugden and last but not least friend Pete The Bull Green. All six were required to carry Chads Belts into the ring so where does he go from here. It has to be World or Intercontinental. Plus year year he wants to go one better and win the Schoolboys ABA’s. Last year he was dissapointed not to get Gold when he was outpointed in final.

The night finished with 4 x professional bouts including Main Event Steve Swinburn and Scott Taylor contesting the EFK European Title. This resulted in a very close and split decision and win to Scott Taylor. It was a packed house for Newark Martial Arts with support from Newark Youth Trust

WORLD MARTIAL ARTS GAMES THAILAND. 4 GOLD MEDALS & ONE WHO

DIDN’T GET THE CHANCE GO NMA !!!!!!

Tues saw a slow start to the kickboxing with the majority of day with Muay Thai fighters. Danny Swanwick NMA first and youngest fighter was up against a tough fighter from Pallestine.Weds it was all action kickboxing with all NMA competitors in action and I am pleased to report that 4 got through to the final of the imgc world games. Danny had a  rematch after a controvercial semi final loss against strong kid from pallestine. Danny clearly won the first fight but made no mistake again in the re match. Danny was faced with a fight against an older competitor from the GB squad in the final Jordan dent from Cleveland aged 14. Danny fought temendously with grit skill and determination and I am delighted to announce the first gold medal for NMA.Next up after sailing through to the final was Regis Sugden against another GB fighter Taylor Hunt. Regis was relentless and never gave his opponent a minute, giving away considerable height Regis went to work with blistering fast hands and constant pressure another gold for NMA….Could you believe it we predicted it chad was up against one of the only other juniors to beat him on 2 previous occasions. This time chad had prepared for full contact knowing that fate would bring him and his closest rival in his age and weight class. Patrick lee from Wales weighed in and competed in the same weight class. It was only right they should meet in the final.Chad lived up to his nickname 2 slick as he went about his work in clinical fashion. All the techniques and ring craft was required to dominate such a great opponent such as Patrick.
That is exactly what he did kicks to head and body came reigning on the welsh boy and when it came to the physical stuff chaf matched him and have he some more for good measure as he totally dominated every round.
This was his destiny to win in such dramatic fashion against his biggest rival in the uk. Chad won gold!!!
Next up for NMA in the final was the much improved Lewis Fallon the question was how much had he improved. Like his club mates from NMA along the way they have picked up many admirers from lots of different countries. Lewis was also asked to compete in a heavier weight cat as there were more competitors and he delivered big time. Probably improving by 60% Lewis commanded the action but mostly on his back foot as his opponent was physically bigger Lewis went to work and caught his opponent with several kicks to the head. He used his jab to good effect and worked the body aswell turning his opponent on several occasions giving him nothing to hit. Lewis was declared the unanamous winner another gold for the NMA team.
